From the 2008 Exhibition catalogue from the exhibition at Greenaway Art Gallery, Australia: On 25 May 2006 I purchased an iPod Video (now termed ‘iPod Classic’). It can store and retrieve around 5,900 songs. I spend most of my time updating this database – adding and removing songs to try for the perfect balance. I make playlists to try and encapsulate certain moods or to group favourite songs in the one easily accessible place.
It’s amazing how much the iPod permeates culture – Apple presented the advertising campaign of the 21st Century: iPod’s are everywhere – walk down the street and you’ll see a set of white earphones in most ears.
Apples is a series of work that appropriates Apples’ products and marketing and uses them to explore my experiences, my brush strokes, my music, my clothes, my everyday.
Do you like the Brian Jonestown Massacre? I do, they’re my favourite band. Never heard of them? Then I guess we come from different places. Come and compare our lives; see how my culture compares to yours.
Right now I have 5,764 songs in my pocket.
