I attended an Asialink residency to Beijing, China from August – November of 2010. During this time I endeavoured to print USD due to the cheap labour and materials available. The process was fairly organic and encountered only minor setbacks.
My original intention was to screen print $100 bills, but this proved to be too costly, no matter the size of the paper (100RMB per print).
Upon visiting the touristy Silk Market I decided to approach the work from the position of having Chinese labourers print US$1 coins using a form of the traditional marble carving technique. I had four marble stamps made for 160RMB each and hired workers at a rate of 25RMB per hour. The work was made in just under four hours.
The labour was documented by still photography as the workers refused to be filmed.
